Financial Accountant
Description of Duties
Luther College (www.luthercollege.edu) invites applications for a full-time position in the role of Financial Accountant. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Financial Accountant is responsible for maintaining financial services provided for Luther College’s High School (LCHS) and University (LCUR) campuses including monthly statements, budgets, financial statements, the audit process, fixed asset inventory management and general financial administration.
Responsibilities
Preparation of Monthly Statements
- Responsible for ensuring financial processes are completed on schedule to support the timely preparation of monthly financial statements by:
- Working with the Director of Finance and Manager of Financial Services to establish reporting requirements close schedules required to produce financial statements.
- Ensuring the general ledger and chart of accounts is structured to allow for the required recording and tracking of financial information needed to support financial and management reporting requirements.
- Performing monthly account reconciliations and reasonableness tests.
- Explaining variances from budget.
- Other finance/accounting functions as required.
Budgeting
- Responsible for preparing and monitoring annual campus budgets, completing the fall budget update, and for periodic forecasts including:
- Working with the Director of Finance to establish the annual Budget preparation process and then managing that process.
- Compiling and maintaining working papers and assumptions used to develop the Budgets.
- Providing information and assistance to department managers as required both during the preparation process and throughout the year to monitor approved Budgets.
- Assisting with budgeting for strategic initiatives.
- Identifying budget issues throughout the year and recommending or initiating corrective actions.
- Producing variance reporting and analysis as required, including during the year-end audit.
Financial Statements
- Responsible for preparing timely monthly financial statements for each campus by:
- Working with the Director of Finance to establish reporting requirements and then managing the process necessary to produce financial statements.
- Ensuring the general ledger and chart of accounts is structured to allow for the required recording and tracking of financial information needed to support financial and management reporting requirements.
- Ensuring monthly close schedules are completed as required.
Audit
- Responsible for the lead role in the year-end audit by:
- Preparing and collecting lead sheets and documentation for all balance sheet accounts
- Reconciling all accounts.
- Preparing LCUR, LCHS, Trust Fund and Consolidated financial statements.
- Preparing notes to the financial statements.
- Account reconciliations and reasonableness tests.
Fixed Asset Inventory Management
- Manage procurement process/contracts as required including project close-out and as necessary for year-end accruals.
- Maintain fixed asset inventory including
- depreciation of assets,
- write-off and disposal of assets,
- capitalization of assets upon project completion.
- Maintain facility condition reports and capital budget for replacement and repairs.
- Account reconciliations and reasonableness tests for year-end audit.
Administration
- Cost reporting on major projects.
- Scholarship administration for both campuses.
- Assist the Director of Finance with preparation of financial reports for the Board of Regents, College Leadership Group (CLG), Government of Saskatchewan, Statistics Canada, etc.
- Assist the Director of Finance with the development and maintenance of administrative guidelines and policy statements regarding financial and administrative matters.
- Assist in the strategic planning of both campuses especially as it relates to financial matters but also other areas as requested.
- Other work or analysis as required by the Director of Finance.
Qualifications
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing is required;
- Relevant university education in addition to the professional accounting designation;
- Three to five years of progressively increasing accounting and finance experience including exceptional knowledge of accounting, budget, and audit procedures is preferred;
- Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); knowledge of the specialized software used by Luther College would be an asset (Financial Edge, Ceridian, Dayforce);
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage a large number of tasks simultaneously;
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills;
- Service oriented perspective with internal and external stakeholders; and
- Appreciation, support, and commitment to the College’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
Association
- Maintains working relationships with all operational areas of the College including the President, Dean, Principal, other members of the CLG, faculty, and staff, especially the Managers of Physical Plant and Food Services.
- External contacts include senior members of University and Federated College administrations, and external auditors.
Working Conditions
- This is a full-time position with hours of work normally totaling 35 hours per week; however, irregular and extended hours are required from time to time due to College events, special projects, or emergencies.
- The work is performed primarily in an office environment.
- This position is based primarily at the LCUR campus, though a regular presence at the LCHS campus is required.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $77,127 to $104,063 as of July 1, 2025.
