The Faculty of Fine Arts provides you with the freedom to be creative in a supportive learning environment. You will receive a broad education incorporating liberal arts with training in your subject area. Some degree programs are more general while others, such as the BFA and BMus, provide intensive skill development in the major.

You will develop the skills to communicate in an imaginative and unique manner and to understand, interpret and critically evaluate material. You will be encouraged to take risks and push the limits, building confidence in your own abilities and what you can accomplish.

Subjects and degrees: 

Media production and studies: In the age of information and converging media, the department provides an interdisciplinary learning experience where art and culture are critically analyzed. Students study a variety of forms of film and video, including documentary, narrative, and experimental. 

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in film and video production provides technical courses in film production, script-writing, directing, editing as well as media studies.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in film and video studies provides a broad liberal arts education with a focus on critical studies of media.
The Bachelor of Arts Honours in film and video studies is similar to the BA with more specialization in the major and is often chosen by students preparing for graduate studies.

Music: Creating and studying the rhythms and melodies expressed through music is the role of a music student. The department provides a combination of private studio lessons, public performance opportunities, as well as courses in music history, composition, music theory. Each semester students are required to participate in at least one large ensemble such as band, choir or orchestra.

 

 

The Bachelor of Music: Students major in performance, music history, or composition. Requirements include theory and history courses, private studio lessons, recitals, and ensemble participation. Audition and theory test are required.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Bachelor of Music Education Trains students to be high school music teachers and is jointly offered by the Faculties of Fine Arts and Education. Students major in music education and choose a teaching minor. Audition, theory test, and Teacher Education Admission Profile are required.
The Bachelor of Arts A broad liberal arts education is combined with courses in music history, theory and analysis.
The Bachelor of Arts Honours Requires students to specialize in one of composition, music history, or theory.

Theatre: Students enjoy hands-on, practical training as well as theoretical preparation. They put together a full season of plays and are involved in each component from acting to set design to stage management. Courses in other fine arts, humanities and sciences are taken to create a comprehensive, interdisciplinary knowledge base.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts students major in acting, set design or stage management. Class sizes are small and extensive involvement in department productions is emphasized.
The BA in theatre arts Students are able to gain an education that explores different practical components of theatre with less specialization than the BFA degree.
The BA and BA Honours in theatre studies Provides a strong libeal arts base. Students study dramaturgy, theatre history and dramatic or performance theory. The Honours program allows students to specialize further.

Art: Students are exposed to practical studio courses in the visual arts as well as the theory and history of art throughout the world. Studio courses are small and focus on skill development and technique. Art history takes an interdisciplinary approach to artistic representation in regions and time periods.

The Bachelor of Art An intensive degree requiring a concentration in  ceramics, drawing, intermedia, painting, printmaking or sculpture. Art history courses which place studio techniques into context are required as are liberal arts courses.
The Bachelor of Arts Less intensive than the BFA, this degree provides an  overview of studio art and includes electives, fine arts and liberal arts requirements.

Art history: This discipline examines art as representation, historical and cultural perspective, and includes specialized studies in museum and curatorial practice. Courses study art and architecture in depth, exploring issues surrounding works to provide a contextual perspective. Students gain a greater understanding of art theory and criticism, with insights into classical and modern beauty.

The Bachelor of Arts This degree provides a focus on art history and provides the flexibility of many liberal arts and other fine arts courses.
The BA Honours Allows students to specialize further.

Minors:
Where there is space in a student’s program, fine arts majors can complete minors in a choice of several arts, science and fine arts disciplines. This is a list of the minors offered by the Faculty of Fine Arts.
