The establishment of religious studies
In the late 1960s, the Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan (which would later become the University of Regina) established a Department of Religious Studies within the Faculty of Arts. Over the following years, the University worked with both Campion College and Luther College to develop the focus and courses for the religious studies program. A focus of the newly introduced discipline was the role and significance of world religions in relation to western Christianity. Courses at Luther were initially taught by Rev Don King, and in 1976, Dr Roland Miller joined the faculty as professor of Islam and world religions. In 1977, Luther student Bryan Hillis was the first graduate of the religious studies program, then titled a divisional major in the humanities. From the inception of the program, Luther College was, and continues to be, very involved in the development of religious studies and its delivery at the University of Regina.
