Dress code

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

The way that staff and students dress has an impact on the tone of the school; therefore, all are expected to dress appropriately for their particular roles in the school and in a way that shows respect for themselves, others and the school. Our standard of dress and appearance marks our school as a place of dignity and minimizes distractions to learning. This does not mean that clothes must be “dressy”.  Casual clothing in which students feel comfortable for various learning activities such as outdoor science projects or art assignments is acceptable.

The dress code is in effect throughout the building on school days during school hours. The final decision as to proper dress will be made by the school administration. Violation of the dress code could result in the student being sent home to change. Exceptions are made during evenings, weekends and on specific school dress days.

Guidelines

  • Denim jeans of any color are not permitted. Other clothing made of denim fabric or fabric resembling denim is not permitted.
  • Bare midriffs are unacceptable. There must be no skin visible between upper and lower garments while standing or sitting. This rules out very low rise pants/skirts/shorts and short tops.
  • Items that are revealing or provocative are unacceptable. Sleeveless tops are acceptable but must not be low cut and must cover the entire shoulder. No halter tops or spaghetti strap tops for girls and no muscle shirts for guys.
  • Undergarments must not be exposed at any times, standing or sitting, including long underwear and bra straps.
  • Skirts must be no shorter than a hand’s width from the top of the kneecap to the bottom of the hem.
  • Shorts and beach sandals may be worn only in May, June and September.  Shorts must be no shorter than the width of the wearer’s four fingers from the top of the kneecap to the bottom of the hem.
  • T-shirts with questionable images or sayings, or with alcohol, tobacco or other drug advertisements may not be worn.

  • Bare feet or socks without shoes are not acceptable.
  • Clothing must be clean, properly fitting and free from holes, rips or frayed edges.
  • Outdoor clothing (parkas, jackets, mitts, etc.) must not be worn in instructional areas.  Hats, toques or bandannas must not be worn indoors (males and females).
