Luther College Scholarship, Bursary & Financial Aid Application

In June, scholarships are awarded to current Luther College High School students in recognition of their achievements over the past school year. The selection is made by the Awards Committee according to the criteria for each scholarship or bursary.
 
No application is necessary with the exception of the Access Communications Centennial ScholarshipDoris Hetland Memorial Award  and the McIlwrick Family Service to Society Award. To apply for these scholarships contact the admissions adviser for Luther College High School. The application forms can be found online or picked up in the Guidance Office.  Completed application forms can be turned in to Mrs Fry's office or the Main Office by Tuesday 19 April 2011.
 
The Access Communications Centennial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving grade 12 Saskatchewan student who is actively engaged in his / her community. Students considered for this award will also have demonstrated academic achievement and plans to pursue their post-secondary education. This scholarship is provided by Access Communications Co-operative Limited as a part of their Centennial Scholarship program which began in 2005. Click here for the printable application form.
 
The Ashley Anderson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating student who is recognised by both students and staff for his / her optimism, energy, caring, kindness, compassion, support for other students, and enthusiastic involvement in school life. The student is in good academic standing and is active in a number of school activities, ideally including at least one sport. The scholarship was established by contributions from family and friends to honour the memory of Ashley, who attended Luther College from 1996 to 2000.
 
The Philip Assman Memorial Award is given to a grade 12 student who will take his or her first year of studies at Luther College at the University of Regina or another church college and has an interest in Christian ministry. Mr Assman, a 1928 graduate of Luther College, provided this scholarship from his estate.
 
The John Ast Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a grade 11 student on the basis of attitude with a high academic standing in science. John Ast sent four of his children to Luther College (Ernest, Harold, Henry and Erna); his son Henry taught at Luther from 1936 to 1973.

The Lloyd Barber Family Scholar-Athlete Award is given to graduating grade 12 students who excel in sports and academics, and display strong leadership qualities. One award is made to a male, and one to a female. The awards were established by Dr Lloyd Barber and his family. Dr Barber graduated from Luther in 1950 and went on to serve as the president of the University of Regina.

The Blakely Family Memorial Award is given to the returning grade 9 or 10 student showing the greatest athletic potential. Winifred Blakely’s daughter, Bev, who graduated from Luther College in 1956, established this award. This award is also supported by the Gertrude Sherriff endowment fund.
 
The Blake Carson Award in Mathematics is given to a grade 11 Saskatchewan student who has shown general proficiency in math. Established in 2006 with a gift from Merlis M R Belsher (HS’53), the award is given in memory of Mr Carson, a former math teacher at Luther, who was well-loved and respected by his students and peers.
 
The Beryl Chalmers Memorial Award is given to a graduating student who is entering either the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan and who is planning a career in either journalism or veterinary medicine. The award was established by the family of Beryl Chalmers. Preference is given to rural Saskatchewan students who are, as Beryl was, progressive thinkers and who live fully and well.
 
The Fred & Violetta Chalmers Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two grade 12 students who will enrol at either the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan—one for fine arts, preferably drama, and one for business administration, commerce, or mathematics. The scholarships are donated by the Chalmers family.
 
The John Chomay Scholarship is awarded to one female student and one male student who exemplify courage, tenacity, perseverance, teamwork and leadership in athletic endeavours, and demonstrate a positive attitude toward academic performance. John Chomay, founder of LIT, taught at Luther College from 1951 to 1957.
 
The Allan Christiansen Memorial Scholarship is awarded to returning grades 10, 11, and 12 students who have above-average scholastic achievement, who exhibit kindness and consideration for others, and who quietly and gently demonstrate traits of exemplary character. The scholarships were established in memory of Pastor C by his family and friends, and by alumni of the College. Pastor C served the College for 38 years in such roles as dean, teacher, guidance counsellor, chapel coordinator, vice-principal and principal.
 
The Gladys Christie Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a grade 11 or 12 female student who has excelled in French and intends to study the language at a post-secondary institution. The scholarship honours Gladys Christie, who taught French at Luther for more than 30 years. It was originally established by the Zonta Club of Regina, of which Miss Christie was a member. Today it is sponsored by alumna Hertha Pfeifer, a member of the club, who was also Miss Christie’s student and friend.
 
The Harold & Joyce Dietrich Scholarship is awarded to a worthy student who makes a positive Christian contribution to school life. Dr Dietrich attended Luther College in 1948 and 1949, and served on the Board of Regents for over 25 years.
 
The John Dietrich Memorial Choral Scholarship is awarded to a returning student who is fully active in the choral music program at Luther College. This scholarship was established by John’s mother, Mrs Joyce Dietrich, in 2006 in memory of her son, John (HS’77).
 
The Dusterbeck Memorial Millennium Scholarship is awarded to students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 with above-average academic records who demonstrate consideration for and kindness towards others. The scholarships are donated by the descendants of Esther Henriette (Maneck) Dusterbeck.
 
The Ellis-Weston Scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who excels in history and social studies. The scholarship is donated by Rev Dr Walter Ellis in honour of his parents, Warren James and Lesley Mary (Weston) Ellis, in appreciation of the sacrifices they made in providing him with an education.
 
The Elaine Engel Memorial Bursary is granted to a graduating student who plans to pursue studies in health sciences. Elaine Engel was a dedicated nurse whose daughters attended Luther College.
 
The Cathy Felstrom Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a grade 12 student enrolling at Luther or another university, preferably Lutheran, who demonstrates academic achievement and exemplary character. It is donated by the Felstrom family in honour of Cathy, who graduated from Luther in 1978.
 
The Rev Arnold Fricke Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student in grade 10 or 11 who has proven Christian leadership and has expressed interest in a church vocation. Rev Fricke was a member of the Luther College Board of Regents from 1931 to 1955, and served as Board Chair from 1941 to 1943.
 
The Ella Fricke Memorial Award in Music is given to a student who performed in the fall musical production and who displays talent, commitment, personal integrity, leadership, and willingness to work with others to ensure the musical is a success. The award was established in 2005 by Ella’s sister, Irma Wagner, in honour of Ella’s love of music.
 
The Lydia & Otto Fuhrmann Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student with proven leadership ability. Mr Fuhrmann served on the Board of Regents from 1931 to 1953, serving many years as Chair, and supervised the building of the gymnasium. The Fuhrmanns’ daughter, Gertrude Sherriff, a graduate of Luther, established this award.
 
The Guenzel Knoll Dormitory Scholarship is awarded annually to a male or female dormitory student who is completing grade 9, 10, or 11, and plans to return to Luther College as a dormitory student in the following year. The award will be given to the dormitory student who achieves academically and who best exhibits being a model dormitory resident. The award was established by Berbel (Guenzel) Knoll and her friends, after her retirement as Principal of Luther College high school in 2007.
 
The Regan Grant Memorial Music Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding singer in the Luther College Choir who has professional potential and maintains a good academic average. The scholarship is provided by Mary Grant in honour of her son, Regan, who lived in Luther’s residence at the College’s university campus in the late 1970s.
 
The Amalie Haensel Memorial Scholarship recognises a deserving grade 10 student who, through dedication to his or her studies, has shown the most academic improvement in the school year. The scholarship is renewable in grades 11 and 12 providing the student maintains a satisfactory level of academic performance. The scholarship is provided by alumna Hertha Pfeifer in honour of her aunt, Amalie Haensel, who was employed in Luther College’s kitchen when the College moved to Regina from Melville in 1926.
 
The Donald Hagan Memorial Award is given to a male student who excels in English and creative expression. Donald’s mother, Ellen (HS’49), established the award. Donald attended Luther College from 1969 to 1974.
 
The Doris Hetland Memorial Award is made available to a graduating grade 12 student who is planning to pursue a university degree, has demonstrated an interest in the field of healthcare, and displays through his / her actions a spirit of generosity and kindness. The award was established by the Hetland Educational Foundation, Inc in remembrance of Doris’ belief in the value of education. This scholarship requires an application form. The Dr Richard Hordern & Nancy Talsness Hordern Award is given to a graduating grade 12 student who is attending Luther College at the University of Regina who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and made strong contributions to the life of the College through co-curricular and other community activities. The award was established in recognition of the eleven years of service that Pastor and Mrs Hordern committed to the College during his presidency.
 
The Gladys Hubick Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student intending to study education. This scholarship is provided by the families of Janice and Peter Stratychuk and Evan and Pat Hubick in tribute to their mother’s many years of service as a teacher.
 
The International Baccalaureate Award is given to an outstanding International Baccalaureate student.
 
The Michael & Hildegard Kontz Scholarship is awarded annually to provide financial support to a returning grade 10 or 11 Saskatchewan student, preferably Lutheran, demonstrating scholastic achievement. Mr and Mrs Kontz are the parents of two Luther graduates.
 
The Liefeld Scholarship, one for proficiency in science and the other for proficiency in music, is awarded to grade 12 students. They are donated by the children of Dr Paul Liefeld who taught at Luther College from 1930 to 1972.
 
The Luther College Board of Regents Scholarship is awarded to deserving grade 12 students who plan to attend Luther at the University of Regina.
 
The Luther College Faculty Award is given to students in grades 10, 11 and 12 demonstrating a high degree of academic improvement. Funding is from annual donations made by alumni and other friends of the College.
 
The Luther College Scholarship is awarded to outstanding scholars in grades 9 to 12. The scholarship is tenable at both Luther College campuses. Funding is from annual donations made by alumni and other friends of the College.
 
The Lawrence H Mang German Scholarship is awarded to a grade 12 student intending to pursue Germanic studies at either the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan. Professor Mang taught at Luther College from 1946 to 1978.
 
The Chief Justice Martin Award is given to the student with the highest standing in Latin.
 
The McIlwrick Family Recognition of Resilience & Personal Achievement is given to two students who persevere and successfully adapt to adversity. The award is a celebration of determination and strength of character, and was established in 2003 by Dr Joann McIlwrick to thank her parents, who fostered the dreams and goals of their daughters through support, encouragement and sacrifice.
 
The McIlwrick Family Service to Society Award is awarded to a student who is actively engaged in a volunteer capacity that provides him / her the opportunity to assist others. The award is meant to recognise students who are making a difference in our society through their activities. It was established in 2004 by Dr Joann McIlwrick, a graduate of Luther College High School (1990) and Luther College at the University of Regina (1994). Dr McIlwrick named the award in honour of her family, who taught her the importance of helping others in need. This scholarship requires an application form. The Mende History Scholarship is awarded to a grade 10 or 11 student who recognises history’s joy and demonstrates insight. The scholarship is provided by Gunther Mende (HS’59).
 
The Mende-Mills Music Scholarship in honour of Elizabeth and Harlow Mills, former music teachers in Pasadena, California, is awarded to a new or returning student who displays outstanding choral music leadership and financial need. The scholarship is provided by Gunter Mende (HS’59).

The Jim Morton Memorial Scholarship is awarded to resident students who demonstrate academic achievement and exemplary character. One scholarship is made to a male and one to a female. Jim Morton attended Luther College from 1979 to 1981. This scholarship is donated by his parents.
 
The Jeremy Nelson Memorial Graduate Scholarship was established in 2007 to celebrate and honour Jeremy’s life. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who is entering a post-secondary institution and has demonstrated academic achievement. The award is open to all graduating students; however, preference is given to students who are planning to pursue a degree in history or political science. A grade 10 student at Luther College high school, Jeremy had a passion for learning and knowledge and a commitment to the open and free exchange of ideas that are essential components of Luther College’s educational philosophy.
 
The Nostbakken Award for Visual Art honours a gifted student in any grade who demonstrates unique talent, temperament, ability, and perseverance in the making of art. This award was established by Richard and Ann Nostbakken. Mr Nostbakken taught art at Luther for 30 years.
 
The Henrik Opheim Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student whose character, academic record, and musical ability have enriched the musical life of Luther College.
 
The Noreen Peacock in Remembrance Award in Athletics (Female) was established in Noreen’s memory in 2006 by her husband, Keith Peacock (HS’39). Although she was not a graduate of Luther, Noreen was a strong supporter of the College, and both of Keith’s and Noreen’s grandchildren attended Luther. Noreen is fondly remembered by her husband as a woman with a great zest for life who loved children and animals. The award is given annually to the best female athlete who is completing grade 10 or 11 and is in academic good standing. Preference is given to those not receiving another athletic award at the Baccalaureate and Closing Exercises.

The Posehn Choral Leadership Award is given annually to a returning student in good academic standing who has the talent and desire to build a successful and rewarding career as a choir performer or director or whose work as a section leader or accompanist has enriched the music programme. Students who show leadership, character, as well as talent and actively participate in Luther College’s choral programme will be considered. The award was established by Greg Posehn (HS’78), who, along with his father Walter (HS’51), was enriched by his experiences as a choir member while studying at Luther College.
 
The Tim Powell Memorial Bursary is granted to a grade 9, 10, or 11 student who shows courage, quiet perseverance, commitment to the Christian faith, and a strong involvement in co-curricular programs. The bursary is donated by the family and friends of Tim Powell, whose children attended Luther College.
 
The Edith Raths Choral Leadership Award was established to honour Mrs Raths and recognise her role as an outstanding choral director. The award is given to a returning grade 11 or 12 student who displays outstanding leadership and who shows potential as a future choral director. Edith enriched the lives of thousands of singers and worshippers. She directed Lutheran choirs in Winnipeg for over 50 years. Edith’s husband, Rev Wilfred Raths, and her grandson, Kristjan, are graduates of Luther College.
 
The Herman Sattler Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who excels academically, particularly in the sciences; has been involved in a broad range of school activities; exemplifies consideration and kindness for others; and will be pursuing post-secondary education. Herman graduated from Luther College in 1989.
 
The Dorothea Sauer Memorial Award is awarded to a female student for proficiency in English and fine arts. The award was established by Dorothea’s mother and brother. Dorothea attended Luther College from 1938 to 1942. Dorothea had a successful career in the theatre in Toronto before her untimely death at age 26.
 
The Michael & Christine Schemmer Memorial Bursary is granted to a resident student who has participated in the choral program. It is given by Christine’s children, Lorne (1954-1955) and Cliff (1952-1953).
 
The Ben Schoots Memorial Award is given to a grade 10 male student who demonstrates strong athletic and academic ability. The award was established by Ben’s parents in memory of Ben, who graduated from Luther in 1982.
 
The Dr Franklin E Scribner and Margaret H Scribner Memorial Prize is awarded to either a Grade 11 student showing a high degree of proficiency in English or a Grade 12 student showing a high degree of proficiency in Biology. The recipient of the prize should also be in overall academic good standing.
 
The Gertrude Sherriff Performing Arts Award was established in 2008 through the Gertrude Sherriff endowment fund. It is awarded to a student who makes a significant contribution to the College’s music and drama productions and who maintains an excellent academic record.
 
The Gertrude Sherriff Scholarship & Award Fund was established in 2005 with a bequest from Mrs Sherriff's will. The fund supports the following five awards:

  • Gertrude Sherriff Scholarship in Chemistry
  • Gertrude Sherriff Scholarship in Physics
  • Gertrude Sherriff Scholarship in Math
  • Gertrude Sherriff Scholarship in Film & Video
  • Gertrude Sherriff Memorial Award 

The scholarships are awarded to graduating students who are entering a post-secondary institution and who have shown proficiency in those subjects.

The Cecile & Robert Stark Scholarship is awarded to a student who attended Luther in both grades 11 and 12 and who combines high scholastic achievement in algebra, geo-trig, and calculus with exemplary co-curricular commitment. The scholarship is provided by the children of Cecile and Robert in recognition of the sacrifices they made to provide education and co-curricular opportunities for their children.
 
The Cornelia Taschow-Graupe Grades 9, 10, and 11 Scholarships in Music were established by Cornelia Taschow-Graupe, language teacher at Luther and enthusiastic supporter of the College’s mission, in 2009/10.  The scholarships are awarded annually to students who are completing grades 9, 10, and 11 respectively who have shown leadership in the music program at Luther College and are in general academic good standing. Preference is given to those not receiving another scholarship or award in music.

The Cornelia Taschow-Graupe Grades 9, 10, and 11 Scholarships in German are awarded annually to students who are completing grades 9, 10 and 11 respectively, who have shown the greatest promise in German, and continue the study of the language in the next academic year. The recipients will also be in general academic good standing.

The Cornelia Taschow-Graupe Grade 12 Scholarship in German is awarded annually to a student who is completing grade 12, has shown the greatest promise in their German studies in previous grades and plans to continue the study of the language at a post-secondary institution. The student will also be in general academic good-standing.

The Cornelia Taschow-Graupe Grade 12 Scholarship in Music is awarded annually to a student who is completing grade 12, shows leadership in the music program of Luther College, is in good academic standing and plans to attend a post-secondary institution.
 
The Reverend Arnold Tiefenbach Scholarship in Christian Ethics is awarded to a grade 11 Saskatchewan student with the highest overall average in Christian Ethics 9, 10, and 20. The award was established in 2006 with a gift from Merlis M R Belsher (HS‘53) to recognise Rev Tiefenbach’s long and faithful service to Luther College.
 
The Henry O Timnick Award is awarded for musical excellence. Henry attended Luther College from 1947 to 1949 and went on to a distinguished business career in the United States.
 
The Donald H Voigts Memorial Bursary is granted to a graduating student who has made a positive Christian contribution to the life of the College. Reverend Voigts was the first pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in Regina (1947-1956) and served as chaplain at Luther College.
 
The Fred Wagner Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student with preference given to one who is proficient in English and has a special interest in drama. Mr Wagner taught at Luther College from 1933 to 1965. This scholarship is donated by the Wagner family, friends and alumni.
 
The Irma Wagner Academic Improvement Award is an award presented to a student entering grade 10, 11, or 12 who has made the greatest adjustment in his / her attitude towards his / her studies to the best of his / her ability. Irma, who will be 93 on 28 May, is a long-time friend of Luther College.
 
The Anne A Whitmore Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating student and, subject to maintaining suitable grades, is renewable for up to three years against tuition fees at the university of the student’s choice. The student must maintain an average of at least 80%, display an interest and ability in English literature, and be an active participant in one or more of the theatrical or literary activities of Luther College. The recipient must exhibit genuine concern and care for other students. This scholarship was established in memory of Anne by her family and many friends. Anne attended Luther College from 1990 to 1994.
