Outdoor education club
Organisers: Mr Hall, Mr Casper and Mr Hunter
Outdoor education at Luther College began in the mid-1970s with Luther College biology teacher Randy Brooks coordinating field trips for his high school students. At that time, grade 11s hiked and repelled in the Montana Badlands, while senior students canoed on Otter Lake, along the Churchill River.
Since then, outdoor education has become a popular co-curricular club that invites grades 10 through 12 students who love the great outdoors and are willing experience something new to participate in special wilderness experiences. In the winter season, students camp out in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. In early June, the students of Luther College high school travel nine hours north to carry on the school’s legacy of canoeing Otter Lake.
As part of the Churchhill River, scenic Otter Lake is connected to a chain of lakes that span the width of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, eventually emptying in Hudson Bay.
"We hope that this year's canoe trip will foster a life-long love of the outdoors, build new friendships, and help to develop responsible, independent people," says outdoor education club co-coordinator and teacher, Dave Hall.
